Oil on linen canvas
2022
This work was created as part of a commission to respond to Fellini’s films, specifically Giulietta degli Spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits). The painting reflects the film’s exploration of fluid sexuality and personal awakening, weaving these themes into a layered composition.
The Indonesian wooden Wayang Golek figures to the left of Marla’s head evoke a connection to cultural traditions while emphasizing the interplay between the past and present.
The inclusion of the cat adds an element of mystery and independence, while the fruit bowl symbolizes abundance and indulgence, enhancing the sense of lushness present in the scene. The emotional depth of the blue and purple tones underscores a dreamlike atmosphere, echoing Fellini’s surrealist aesthetic.
Marla is depicted in a state of awakening, embracing a renewed perspective on the world around her. I’m trying to capture the transformative journey of self-discovery and liberation, much like the film it responds to.
