Thai Villages

I collaborated with researchers who were working with the Thai development project, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) supports the original generation of villagers, who implement the transition from a traditional village, to a developed tourist destination.

Education is provided for the original generation in the knowledge of tourism and building of tourism entrepreneurs with sustainability goals as well as access to quality participation in the development process. But this does not include education to build tourism entrepreneurs in the future generations beyond the original generation.

The aim is to build awareness of the fragility and value of natural resources and cultural heritage attractions that a younger generation never experienced, because the original resources are already developed. The problem is development spoils what resources and cultural heritage that attracted the tourists. Then the village is stuck with development and no tourists!

Before & After

Drawing create clarity as to what the villagers are thinking and feeling. Drawings also create discussion points to open conversations with locals and are inclusive of all ages which often only the head of the village participates in the input on the future of the village.

Below are some samples from a pilot program conducting a workshop in Chiangkhun village, Thailand.

Each set of drawings are produced by the same person.

  1. The drawing on the left is the makers’ view of their village now.
  2. The drawing on the right is the makers’ view of how they see their village will change in 10 years.
